Origins and development

The cemetery of the Protestant Karlshorst parish was established in 1907 when part of New Friedrichsfelde Cemetery was separated. The grounds remain adjacent, but Berlin’s cemetery inventory lists them separately: Zur frohen Botschaft has number 5521 and New Friedrichsfelde Cemetery has number 5520. Use the exact cemetery name and Robert-Siewert-Straße 67 address for historical research or a grave enquiry.

The Gregorovius family tomb provides a dated point of reference. Berlin’s monument database records its completion in 1909 and places it in this Protestant cemetery. Oscar Gregorovius (1845–1913), a builder who helped shape Karlshorst, is buried here. An exact grave position is not given here; ask the administration for the section before visiting.

Design and present-day character

The Protestant Zur frohen Botschaft Cemetery is at Robert-Siewert-Straße 67. Its chapel and the Gregorovius family grave are among Karlshorst’s historic monuments. The adjoining New Friedrichsfelde Cemetery is a separate site.

Read this character description together with the development of Karlshorst Cemetery / Zur frohen Botschaft: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.
